bugeting

Well i think the technical details need to come first.
then it would paint a fairer picture on how successful
the trip was since we cannot measure intangibles like
feelings or put a value on lessons learnt and friends made.
so just check out the objectives we have met.

1) stayed within budget
2) satisfied our itinerary and even secondary objectives
3) stayed safe, and didnt get lost

but back to the main point how much I spent. Lionel
kept account of his own share. we carried our own weight.
we had a $600SGD budget which we kept within and
even had extras leftover. so here goes, 600 per person
in a week in vietnam...

Rates
1USD = 1.55SGD
1USD = 16 000VND

Definitions
Total - lionel and I
Shared - sum divided by 2 people
1 person cost - cost individual would have paid (alone)
per person - in a group of 2

Travel
Total travel cost (flight, bus and 1 scooter) = 313.90USD
1 person cost = 157 USD
total local travel =60.625USD
1 person local per day = (4.70 - 5.40)USD
1 person shared per day = (4 - 4.35)USD

Accomodation
(prices quoted @ non-peak rates, not inclusive of tips)
Total (also the 1 person cost) = 98USD

1 person per day = 14USD
per person (shared) = 49USD
per person (shared) per day = 7USD

Shopping
(personal clothes, accessories, services. strictly non-essentials)
total = 48USD
per day = 7USD

Water
(excludes juice and beer and soft drinks. i did take the
risk and drink tap water. supermarkets have fixed
prices so less likely to be cheated)
total = 5.2USD

Food and Drinks
(2 extravagant nights and 1 ripoff. Some meals included
in tour ticket. not inclusive of tips)
buget trip estimation
breakfast, (5000 - 12 000)VND
lunch, (10 000 - 50 000)VND
dinner, (28 000 - 50 000)VND
per day = 4.7USD is more than enough
*food bought from hotels are more pricey
my total = 1 109 000VND = 69.3125USD
per day = 9.9USD

Entry Fees
reunification palace, war remnants museum and cu chi tunnels
total = 100 000VND = 6.25USD

My total cost should be priced up to 30USD more at most,
adjusting due to tips, unfactored minor costs, rounding off
of figures and exchange rates. but all in all i still have spares
for emergency use which went to my duty free shopping. haha
so i did fulfil having a reserve allotment. which was very
important especially on the last day as we incurred unexpected
costs. vietnam's airport tax is not included in tiger's ticket till
March 2008. but dont worry, its just an example of things
that u cannot plan for and will only know about when you
are on the ground.
